Everyone Sees the Finish, Nobody Sees the Hanging

Drywall is the one trade where the quality of the work is judged entirely by what you cannot see. Nobody looks at a wall and admires the screw pattern. What they notice is the seam that shows when the afternoon sun hits it sideways, or the patch that is a slightly different texture from the wall around it.
Galactic Builders LLC handles drywall installation, finishing and repair across South Bend and the Michiana area. We hang, tape, finish and texture as part of our remodeling projects, and we take drywall only jobs too, from a single damaged ceiling to a whole basement.
The work is priced in writing before we start, and the dust stays in the room we are working in.

Our Drywall Services

New Drywall Installation and Hanging

Full rooms, additions, basements and garages. Sheets hung to minimize seams, fastened correctly, with corner bead set straight so the corners read clean once painted. Board is cut around outlets, boxes and windows rather than patched in afterwards.

Taping, Mudding and Finishing

Tape, multiple coats of compound, and sanding to the finish level the room actually needs. This is where the time goes on any drywall job, and it is the step that separates a wall that looks flat from one that only looks flat until the light changes.

Drywall Repair and Patching

Holes, cracks, dents, corner damage, and repairs after a leak has been fixed. Small patches get taped and feathered properly rather than filled and hoped for. If the damage came from water, the source needs to be resolved first, and any wet material has to come out before we close the wall back up.

Ceilings and Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Ceiling repairs, water stain repairs and popcorn ceiling removal followed by a smooth or knockdown finish. Important caution: ceilings sprayed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos, and that material must be tested before anything disturbs it. If a test comes back positive, removal is licensed abatement work and we will refer you rather than touch it. VERIFY: confirm Galactic Builders position on testing and referral

Plaster Repair in Older Homes

A large share of South Bend housing has plaster over wood lath rather than drywall. Plaster cracks along stress lines, comes loose from the lath, and does not behave like drywall when you patch it. Depending on the wall, the right answer is either repairing and skim coating the plaster or removing it and replacing that section with drywall blended into the surrounding surface. We will tell you which one your wall justifies.

Basements, Garages and Specialty Board

Moisture resistant board for bathrooms and below grade spaces, cement board behind tile, and sound dampening assemblies for media rooms, offices and shared walls. Using standard board where a specialty board belongs is a cheap decision that shows up two years later. For full basement projects, see our basement remodeling page.

Finish Levels: What You Are Actually Paying For

When two drywall quotes are far apart, the finish level is usually the reason. There is an industry scale for how far the finishing work is taken, and most homeowners have never been told it exists.
Level 4 is the standard for most walls in a home. Seams and fasteners are coated and sanded, and it looks flat under normal lighting with a flat or matte paint.
Level 5 adds a skim coat over the entire surface. It costs more and it is the right call where light rakes across a wall, on large open walls, in rooms with big windows, and anywhere you are using a gloss or semi gloss paint that shows every imperfection.
We will tell you which level each room actually needs instead of quietly quoting the cheaper one and letting you discover the difference after the painter leaves.

Texture Matching

A repair is only finished when you cannot find it. Knockdown, orange peel, hand troweled and older plaster textures all behave differently, and matching one means getting the mix, the spray pressure and the timing right on the day. We test the match on a sample area before touching the wall, and we feather the repair out far enough that the transition disappears rather than sitting in a visible square. On some older textures a perfect blend is not achievable, and in those cases we will say so up front and talk about finishing the full wall or ceiling instead of pretending a patch will vanish.

Dust Control

Drywall dust is the single biggest complaint homeowners have about this trade. It is fine enough to travel through a house, settle on everything, and get pulled into the HVAC system and redistributed for weeks.
So we seal the work area with plastic and zip access, cover floors and runways, close and cover HVAC returns and supplies in the work zone, and vacuum sand or use dust collecting sanders where the job allows. It takes extra setup time and it is the reason people call us back for the next room.

What our Clients Say About Us

Drywall FAQs

How much does drywall installation cost in South Bend, IN?
It is priced by area for new installation and by job for repairs, and the finish level changes it significantly. A basement hung and finished to Level 4 is very different from a great room finished to Level 5. We give you a written estimate after seeing the space, at no charge.
Hanging is fast. Finishing is not, because each coat of compound has to dry before the next one goes on. A single room is usually a few days start to finish. A full basement runs longer. Rushing the drying time is the most common reason a finish fails.
Yes, painting is one of our services and we can take the job through to a finished painted wall. If you would rather bring in your own painter, we will leave the surface primed and ready. See our interior painting page for details.
Level 4 coats and sands the seams and fasteners, which is standard for most rooms with flat paint. Level 5 adds a skim coat across the entire surface, which is what you want on large walls, in rooms with strong natural light, or with gloss paint that highlights every flaw. Level 5 costs more because it is more work across every square foot.
In most cases yes. Knockdown and orange peel are matched routinely. We test on a sample area first. Some older hand applied and plaster textures are difficult to match perfectly, and when that is the case we will tell you before we start and suggest finishing the whole wall instead.
Yes, and plenty of South Bend homes have them. Plaster over lath needs different handling from drywall. Depending on the condition we either repair and skim coat the plaster, or remove that section and blend new drywall into the surrounding wall so the transition does not show.
It depends on the age. Ceilings sprayed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos, and that has to be tested before anything disturbs it. If the test is positive, removal is licensed abatement work that we will refer out rather than take on. If it is negative, we can remove it and refinish the ceiling smooth or with a new texture.
We seal the work area with plastic and a zip door, protect floors and walkways, cover the HVAC returns and supplies in that zone, and use dust collecting sanding where the job allows. It is extra setup, and it is the difference between one dusty room and a dusty house.
